Get The Facts
Union Square already has far more subsidized housing than any other Somerville square: 534 units compared to 58 in Davis Square, and 80 in Teele Square.

Overview

This project will contribute little or nothing to the square's economic development. Much of the new retail space will actually be SCC's own offices. The only thing this project will lead to is more subsidized housing. The rest of Somerville only requires 12.5% subsidized housing when a private developer builds 8 more units. However, our city leaders passed a new zoning that requires 15% to 17.5% in Union Square with private developments. The need for affordable housing is a regional issue. Somerville doesn't have to take on more than its fair share.
